Flight details: | A difficult day at Combe Gibbet. There was a lovely hour in the morning, when it was overcast, but a breeze and gentle thermals allowed us all to cruise around at up to 500 feet ATO. Then the sun came out but the wind stopped, except for rare cycles. Two (including Simon Steel) got away, then three more; then eight climbed out, but didn't seem to know where to go; some headed downwind, some up, some hung around. Four gliders arrived high, either from Uffington or returning from the big gaggle. Eventually -- after 4 pm -- I managed to climb out under a red Gin, and had a very pleasant time up high in front of the hill. A friendly red kite kept me company on several glides, but showed no interest in finding us climbs.
Just as I was packing up to go and fetch Simon and two others from near Andover, yet another gaggle climbed out -- at after 5 pm. Not bad for April.
