Flight details: | Apparently it's Lanzarote not lanzerote which a few of us have been calling it -Chris told me off for spelling it wrong, it's been bugging him for weeks ;0)
Lanz(A)rote, day 1
Epic! Thought it would be too windy but was actually only about 18mph northerly. We went to a site called El Cuchillo which was around 250ft high, Although most of the 30 ish Hangies flying floated between 1000ft-1500ft above see level.
I had a great hour on that ridge and then climbed to about 2000ft with an RS and drifted back a few km's onto a mountain behind (which was 1300ft asl). A bit of indecisiveness meant that a didn't drift straight back to the next mountain whilst I had the height but I ended up dropping down onto a the nearer mountain and was stuck there for about an hour with a different glider and a couple of falcons to show us lift. I had lots of attempts gliding back to take off but kept turning back when I got too low, eventually I committed to gliding back after 2 hours flying but had a great glide back in the 15+mph headwind- only landed a few fields back from take off. I kept running (after landing) all the way to the front and then took off and spiraled down to everyone else who had landed. Great feeling finally getting back from a mini xc, i forgot what real thermals felt like. Straight to a bar at Famara for a couple of ice cold beers with everyone. Next 6 days looking flyable. Early start at Famara tomorrow. |
