Title: Weak late November thermals
Site:Firle
Pilot:Chris Townsend
Date of flight:23rd November 2013
Wing type:Rigid wing
Flight details:
It started lighter than forecast and a few PGs flew, including the irrepressible Vincent. By the time I arrived and rigged around mid-morning it was a tad too strong for them. My first flight was cut short by my nose cone coming loose and having to land to re-secure it. Then Tim Cox blagged a short flight on my glider. He seemed to like it very much :o) Then I had another couple of hours playing between the Trig Point and Beddingham with Nicos, Youngie, Miles, Luke, Dave Matthews and Taka. DanH, John McB and Java John were out too and it was great to see DanB out after what seems like a long absence. There were a couple of the newer hangies out too, including Simon and Charlie, and it was a good day for them.

There were lots of weak thermals all day but they turned scrappy at about 600ft ATO and I didn't get much above 700ft. Three 360s blew us back too far to carry on and much of the height gain was lost getting back to the front, even on the rigids. Some weak lift lines allowed a couple of short incursions out the front but not far for me. But it was buoyant and 500ft was easy all day.

We packed up as the sun set then a few of us retired to the Ram in Firle for the usual post flight banter.

Miles Hockliffe24th Nov 01:15: Surprising amount of light lift lines out the front, and working best off Beddingham espite the NNNE wind. Was so tempted to go on a glide to my new house, GPS said I needed just 22:1 from the road, so I only needed to find something light on the way ............ Next time !!!
Luke Nichol24th Nov 01:17: Great write up Chris, thanks again to Miles for another very generous go on his VR, damn they're good!!!! Anyway I had a great day between that and flying the tandem, I only did the one but a few more planned for today. Youngie, Vincent and me stayed in the pub (after you all left) until bedtime before retreating back to the top of firle- see you here again in a bit! http://lukenicol.blogspot.co.uk/
Ian White24th Nov 02:06: Nice write up Chris. Sounds like a nice crowd were with you and lovely conditions to fly in. Just before midday I drove past the Dyke on my way back from Brighton and saw 5 gliders rigged. There was 1 PG in the air. An hour or so later from home I saw one PG ground handling on the main face of the Dyke but his wing was coming up almost parallel with the hill! One hangie eventually launched and made a mad dash towards Truleigh before starting to climb so I would reckon Firle was the place to be.
