Even if you are not doing the exam but just want to go over the data then come along.
Topics to be covered:
understand the relationship between wind direction and areas of high and low pressure
• be able to describe in detail a cold front and a warm front (typical clouds, conditions, pressure changes,
wind changes)
• be able to identify some common high, medium and low cloud types, and give their approximate heights
• fully understand convection (the birth and development of a thermal, through to plotting the progress of a
thermal given the ELR and initial temperature)
• understand, and be able to define and use, meteorological terms such as stability, instability, veer, back,
ELR, DALR, SALR, tephigram, anabatic, katabatic

Induction for new CPs 7.30 till 8 pm
The 8 pm till around 10pm
This months coaching evening is the start of the pilot exam talks. We will go through the entire syllabus for this section. Its for anyone who is thinking about moving from CP to Pilot. Even if you dont have all your tasks done yet come along. If you are already pilot rated but want to go over some of the data again then come along as well.
NOTE: These talks are not a replacement for you doing your own study. I dont expect anyone to pass the exam just by going to the talks.
the overall plan is one this month, one in November, one in January and the exam in February.
If any one is interested in taking one of these talks just let me know. The three topics are:
October - Air Law and navigation
November - Meteorology
January - Flight Theory and INstruments
The usual end of the month thursday at Glynde.
7.30 till 8 induction for new members.
8 till 10 ish is still no topic.
If any one has any requests for speakers or topics let me know and I will see what I can do between now and then.
Updates once I have something.
Carrying on from June's evening we will continue the theme of weather, forecasts and improving your flying.
We touched on RASP last time so in this session will cover this in more details and go through the tephigrams (RASP Soundings) in more detail.
I will grab some from July and go over these.
We will also look at things like your first XC, getting away from the Dyke and airspace.
Plus any coaching questions you might have.
7.30 to 8 will be induction for new members then 8 till around 10 ish the coaching evening.
See you all there, come along and have a drink and a chat.
It will be at Glynde Social club as usual
7.30 to 8 will be induction for new members and this will be followed at 8 pm with the coaching evening.
Mainly for newer pilots ( or anyone who wants to turn up - but geared for lower air time). Essentially its an open question evening so you can ask what you like about paragliding and I will do my best to come up with some sensible answers. Anything in particular you want covered let me know. But I will be going over these areas:
Thermalling for beginners.
The new BHPA Foundation skills syllabus (This has not yet been officially released but I have an advanced copy of it)
Progression to being a pilot
Choosing your site - RASP, weather etc.
Coaching and how to improve your flying skills.
Getting away from the hill/first XCs
For any coaches who can make it would be great if you can come along as well.
It will be at the Glynde Social Club.

7.30 till 8 pm Inductionm for new menbers
From 8 pm:
Flybubble Presents: Volbiv by Greg Hamerton
Greg Hamerton is a 'volbiv' or 'fly and camp' enthusiast, comfortable exploring the remote landscapes with his paraglider and a bag of nuts. As a bivi pilot he's best known for his Alone in the Alps series and his more recent experience in the Pyrenees, as well as many back-country adventures in South Africa. In this talk he will give an insight into the full bivi gear he uses, what it's really like to wake up in a bivi bag and other tips on preparing for your own adventure
After a good weekend at Beachy head and with most red ribs getting more good air time, with one young new red rib staying up for most of the day on Sunday, including skimming the rising ridge mist, with us few that didnt want to land, the sun was definitely shinning on us in the air.
Looking ahead to this weekend might keep us guessing if the rain that's forecast, will develop or not, like always, time will tell, and i will post again on fri night for that update.
And get well soon, to one and the (first) red ribs that got things wrong on landing.Just a note to all chaps, even with the most biggest and flattest landing area you could ask for,you should never be complacent and believe paragliding is easy, you are not going to be prepared for all eventualities, but always try too see them coming. Now he's just got to convince the wife that its still safe to fly,but that's another skill that the red rib club cant help you with .

Spring is here and so will be a new month,Hooray. It looks very good for Friday, and the weekend for the red ribs ,wind forecasts show that various directions will keep us guessing which site it might be,but Sunday looks pretty sure, for a stroll up Mt caburn, which has been a long time since we flew that site, lets hope its a good forecast.
So ...what you need to do before you turn up and lob off..first check for my update post Fri night at around 6-7pm for Saturdays plan, and the same on sat eve for Sundays plan.Secondly get that site guide out and study for mt caburn and all of its restriction as its a sensitive site, and thirdly, bring all your kit and refreshments and a clear head, as it will be very very busy, but i will be there to help you ...try ..to stay safe in you pursuit for flying joy.
phil.
ps. post on here if you think you will be showing up on any of the days,so i can get an idea of the numbers.
March's coaching evening is a talk from top pilots Mark Watts and Hugh Miller.
It being help at Fly Sussex to accommodate the expected large number of people turning up.
Hugh will be doing his slide show presentation and Mark will be adding in his own words of wisdom.
I wont be doing any induction that evening for new pilots(see separate notice on this)
