Flight details: | My Super Sunday flight from Coombe - not as inspiring as some but really good fun regardless.
When I took off there were just thermal cycles coming through and it wasn't possible to soar in-between the thermals so it took me some time to get up. Tried to use the stepping up method and eventually got a really good climb at the copse of trees in front of takeoff with about 15 others.
It was quite difficult to find a single core and I had to keep searching and moving around to get good height. At one point I saw a high performance wing take a big nasty collapse so ran away from that air a bit! Eventually the climb petered out near cloud base and the rest of the gaggle was already on glide so I set off in a SE direction to try to get on the Brighton track. Looking at the track log I should maybe have gone West with the drift?
Glided for a bit and found some 0s to circle in beneath a wispy cloud. However the cloud looked pretty rubbish and everyone else in my gaggle was downwind so I followed them via another cloud. Got nothing beneath this cloud and basically raced to the ground, just missing a climb which got about 5 of my gaggle up again.
On reflection I shouldn't have left the 0s I was in, and should have searched around the cloud I passed a bit more before gliding off as there should have been some good air there somewhere. I was aiming for another cloud further downwind but on reflection it was way too far away so I really just flew through blue stuff to the ground.
Still a great flight and a pretty fun retrieve, thanks to Helen (not sure about her surname) for coming to pick Boris, myself and a guy called Matt up after managing to get herself a lift back to the hill! |
