Intuition can be a dangerous thing

Reply to Forum message Re-Writing the Theory of how a wing creates lift... from ChrisTownsend:

Intuition can be a dangerous thing in physics, can't it? But mine, for what it's worth, would be that the air on the lower surface of your curved plate is to all intents and purposes "dead" air (albiet a but ruffled) and you could imagine air flowing from leading edge to trailing edge under the wing, a shorter distance than over the upper surface, but not as smoothly as if there was a nice solid under surface. So still Bernoulli effect but less efficient than a double surface aerofoil.

If paragliders don't fly quick enough for Bernoulli to apply, what applies for those speeds at which both hang gliders and paragliders fly - say 16 to 30+ knots? Sure, Bernoulli effect is about conservation of energy but what's an adiabatic process got to do with speed of flight?

And the curve of the wing is there to cause the air to stick to it? And therefore to cause more parasitic drag? Huh?? If the wing is applying this force to the air, it would be forcing it upwards over the leading edge and the reaction would be a downward force on the front upper surface of the wing. How would that create lift? The downward deflection of the air off the trailing edge alters the net relative airflow to cause the other kind of drag - induced - so how does that help the wing to create lift? That sounds like cause and effect reversed or am I misunderstanding you?

I think the Bernoulli effect is pretty well understood by physicists and has been a solid foundation for extending understanding of aerodynamics over several decades. My scepticism leads me to think we're not looking at an Earth-shattering "relativity overthrows Newtonian mechanics" type of insight here. Not yet anyway.

My first flight over 6 minutes...

Flight Diary from jammyhl:

Date of Flight: Fri, 3 Feb 2012
Site: Devils Dyke
Wing: Paraglider

After an aborted first attempt at launch (distracted by switching on the flight computer..) got into the air cleanly second time and had a great flight just beating up and down the Dyke amongst a dozen or so other pilots. This was a first time for me soaring after getting my CP last year, firs time with more than 1 other pilot in the air, and first time at the Dyke! Could only make 20 or so metres in gain and then chickened out of a top landing amongst all the other wings on the ground (need to practice that again...) so ended up with a flight to the bottom but 42 minutes of flying is more than 5 times my post-CP total previous air time! Many thanks to Craig and Gordon for the ride back to the car park.

Errrrrrr

Reply to Forum message Re-Writing the Theory of how a wing creates lift... from Carole Sherrington:

I thought it was the "equal transit time" part of the theory that he was de-bunking.
Bernoulli applies for adiabatic processes; I'm not convinced that paragliders fly quick enough for that to apply.
There's a whole load of stuff going on, in different conditions.
My mental picture is that the curvature of the wing is there to encourage the air to stick to it, to curve round and be deflected downwards. Because the air now has downwards momentum, a force has been applied to it and by reaction, it has applied a force to the wing.
Although there's all sorts of presure differentially doobries going on, it will give you brain ache if you think about it too deeply. I stand a bit further back and think about the air going in and the air going out. A stall occurs when the radius of curvature required is too tight and the air separates from the wing and is no longer encouraged to flow downwards.....lift is lost.
There's a type of wing called a Jedelsky aerofoil, and single surface HG's are a good approximation to it. Basically it's a plate that's curved, so the top and bottom surfaces are the same. There shouldn't be a pressure difference according to a simple Bernoulli-ism, but it definately produces lift.
It was packed. Did one beat on the main ridge and then about 12:30 wandered West of the car park where it was quieter. Had some nice soaring close to the hill for a while, but then had to leave just as it looked to be getting thermic. Still, it was nice to dust the cobwebs off. The vid is available here http://youtu.be/eM48imjJ5ec but the quality's not the best as I had to improve the brightness given the original footage was so dark.

I still let can't read :)

Reply to Forum message Re-Writing the Theory of how a wing creates lift... from Robbie:

Nothing gets by you does it Steve, lol

I looked at what I wrote, realised I didn't quite read the original post properly so felt a plank and that it was easier to simply delete and admit I messed up again.

Sorry for all those who may have wondered what crap I came up with this time. Still think this physicist is wrong though.

The way I look at this is simply, the parcel of air over the upper surface has to expand across the chord of the wing to keep up with the air below (which is compressed?). To expand that parcel of air without adding anything to it must result in a drop of pressure and it is that drop in pressure that must equalise with the surrounding that lifts the wing (2 thirds) in addition to the positive pressure (1 third) that forces up from below. Think I got that right :)

For those that didn't get a chance to read my previous rubbish, I thought the guy was talking about the surface being curved as being the reason for the drop in pressure but I think he actually just said shape. As Steve said, I wing can be simply a flat plate, my understanding is that it's the positive angle of attack that results in lift, just stick your hand out of the car window while your mates doing 100mph+ to see what I mean. I wing doesn't need to be curved, just a curved one is much better.

A wing is half a 2D venturi. A flat plate can still be half a venturi, but not as good.

This little revelation hasn't changed the way aircraft are designed, or fly, but simply results from and over simplification.

In the absence of energy input,

Pressure + kinetic energy per unit volume + potential energy per unit volume = constant.
Re-Writing the Theory of how a wing creates lift...

Forum message from AndrewEeles:

The classic explanation of how a wing generates enough lift to keep a plane or a bird in the air is wrong, according to a Cambridge University physicist.

Many textbooks and aircraft manuals say that a wing produces lift because air travelling over the curved topside of a wing has to travel further than wind flowing around the flat underside and so has to travel faster to keep up, generating lift. But this standard explanation has been shown to be wrong by a simple experiment where a wing is placed in an air tunnel with jets of smoke flowing over the upper and lower surfaces, said Professor Holger Babinsky.

"A wing lifts when the air pressure above it is lowered. It's often said this happens because the airflow moving over the top, curved surface has a longer distance to travel and needs to go faster to have the same transit time as the air travelling along the lower, flat surface," he said.

"But this is wrong," said Professor Babinsky. "In the worst case, [this explanation] can lead to a fundamental misunderstanding of aerodynamics.".

A video of the experiment carried out at Cambridge shows that air does indeed move faster over the upper, curved surface of a wing, but this is because of the curvature of the upper surface. The air does not move faster in order to "catch up" with the air moving over the relatively shorter distance of the lower wing surface, Professor Babinsky said.

The slow-motion video of the smoke jets shows that the air moving over the upper surface of the wing travels further in the same amount of time than wind flowing past the lower surface. In other words there is no "equal transit time" between the upper and lower surfaces, as demanded by the classic explanation.

"What actually causes lift is introducing a shape into the airflow, which curves the streamlines and introduces pressure changes @ lower pressure on the upper surface and higher pressure on the lower surface," Professor Babinsky said.

The best sunglasses I ever had were glacier goggles made by Bloc or some such cheapish outfit; they really did make it easier to see the shape of clouds. I've never found another pair that do that.

And the flying suit is a genuine SupAir, with repairs from when I bounced on a barbed-wire fence hand-stitched by my good self.

It all in the lenses

Reply to Lost and Found Found at Bo-Peep: sunglasses from Nick Rosenberg:

It's all in the lens technology. I reckon you can see the difference immediately if you compare them with the vision from a cheap pair.

Read about their lenses HERE.

Er, would that be the LIDL flying suit in your profile pic, as recommended last year on this site?
Reply to Forum message that will shut her up..... from steveu:

Reminds me of the scenes during Kevie-Wevie's tandem training.

The tandem instructor regretted giving the "Goat Overlord" the controls, and he screamed MUCH louder.

What was the difference between the car gearbox and the passenger? When the car came to a halt the gearbox stopped whining.
Forum message from steveu:

Hi Neil (and other Skywalk Cayenne fans),

The Cayenne 4 is out, so please can someone go and get a 100-120 size so I can have a cheap glider in two years time.

The gold colour on the C3 is pass@ now, so visit the Skywalk Cayenne 4 page and order your colour schemes now.

I'd prefer you order the green colour scheme, and please Neil, don't fill it with that horrible volcanic or desert dust this time.
Flight Diary from Andrew Craig:

Date of Flight: Mon, 30 Jan 2012
Site: Bo Peep
Wing: Paraglider

Steve Purdie, the Australian cyclists and I waited for the wind, and about 1030 decided to go for breakfast in the greasy spoon cafe by Lewes jail while it came on. Not surprisingly, we got back about 1200 to find it had been good while we were away, with many hundreds of feet to be had (cloud suck?). It then remained scratchy at best for the rest of the day.

Maui Jims?

Reply to Lost and Found Found at Bo-Peep: sunglasses from Nick Rosenberg:

They might be a pair of Maui Jims. If so, they're very expensive and someone will be pleased to get them back.

Maui Jims usually have a model number beginning with MJ on the inside of one of the arms. If so, you can google it for the style name.

They usually have a Maui Jim logo on the top corner of one of the lenses like Ray Ban and are also polarised.

Could be an older model.

Steve Purdy had a pair. Just checked on mine and they're still in the case.

The retreat from Moscow... (+ pics 'n' video)

Flight Diary from Andrew Craig:

Date of Flight: Tue, 31 Jan 2012
Site: Bo Peep
Wing: Paraglider

...was what sprang to mind as the Mad Farmer, Bobby Brown and a few others turned round in the driving snow and wind to walk back down from half way to the trig point (Dave Massie, of course, was flying). But I lagged behind, and rather than trudging through Orel, Vyasma, Bryansk and Belgorod, I noticed that it had eased a bit as well as stopped snowing. So I flew, going west beyond the trig point towards Firle and eventually back east to land beyond the quarry. Very nice.

In the morning, it had been scratchy, but I finally managed to sort out my getting-into-the-pod technique with an Ian Grayland-inspired bungee from my bootlace to the pod. It worked perfectly, and I could even walk, run and climb over stiles with it, so it must be the right length.
Getting to grips with XC in the UK

Forum message from JTurczak:

This, I have to say, is a shameless plug. (if anyone sees a shamed plug let me know)
Here I am keen to learn about XC in the Uk and give it a go.
But where to start and who is in the know?

What's that you say, Carlo from Flybubble is running a Distance Learning Academy, covering XC and the Southern sites

But what about when to fly?

Well, how about that, he is also covering a weather brief and how to identify the possibilities.

Well, that's all well and good but it would be useful to go with an experienced pilot on a tandem to get some first hand experience.

I dont believe it ... there is also an instructional tandem flight included.

Guess its over to Carlo to find out more.....................

Morocco - Anti Atlas and coast

Event from Sky Paragliding:

Guided Week

The Location
Southern Morocco's fantastic climate and topographical set up is ideal for gaining buckets of airtime, coastal and thermic. The majestic foot hills and coast of the Moroccan Anti Atlas Mountains is the destination for stunning flying & super reliable conditions in the winter months.
We base ourselves In the small Berber coastal town of Mirleft.
From here we have easy access to a number of classic dune and coastal sites, as well as larger flying sites set slightly inland where a beautiful 5 km long ridge awaits you for soaring and thermic flights. This ridge boasts a privately owned manicured take off area with caf@, and large safe top and bottom landing zones, all of which are at your disposal on your course.
There is also the potential to venture deeper into the Atlas Mountains for some bigger stuff.

The Guiding
Guiding is led by top international instructor, Tim King.
We will take care of all those annoying logistics that go on behind the scenes on a flying trip so that you can be free to enjoy the flying and get the maximum and best quality flying out of your week.
We pick you up from Agadir airport in our 4X4 and whisk you away to the hotel which is about an hour and a half away. Once you've made yourself at home, and grabbed a cool drink, we will discuss what's in store for the week ahead.
Our knowledge of the area and local connections and great hotel will ensure that all you need to do is enjoy the flying.

You will be flying a variety of sites. Some coastal, some inland. If you thought coastal flying was a bit boring, well check out the scenary at Legzira beaches and fly the @Arches' @ mind blowing. Winter thermalling can be found in abundance just in land on the 5km ridge and blow your socks off thermals can be found deeper in to the Atlas.
Not just a guiding service.
As well as taking care of all the necessary logistics so that your week goes off smoothly from start to finish, Tim will be more than happy to coach you on any points of your flying that you feel may need tidying up. That could be anything from launch techniques, active flying through to thermalling skills

The Accommodation
We understand that after a hard day out on the hills, with the heat of the day and the expenditure of adrenaline, you will be ready for the comforts of a decent hotel and a sumptuous meal. In many places in Morocco and with other operators, this can be hard to find. However, our hotel is well equipped for all your comforts. Beautifully decorated in traditional Moroccan style, En-suite bathrooms with many rooms (first come first served @ book early), copious amounts of hot water, roof sun terrace for that morning tea or coffee or star gazing, atmospheric restaurant and bar to reminisce on the days adventures over a beer or one of the hotels speciality appetizing dishes. There is also free Wifi throughout the hotel.
Our courses are on a full board basis so we set you up in the morning with a hearty breakfast. A packed lunch is provided for the day ahead, although there are plenty of local shops that will sell you anything else that you may require. Topped off in the evening by a selection of meat/fish or vegetable dishes. Sometimes local Spider Crab or Lobster is on the menu, fresh that day, a small supplement may apply to these.
To ensure that you get the best possible service, our maximum group size is just 8 pilots per week.

Cost £575
Purchase a new wing from us and you get your guided week for FREE!

SHGC Annecy 2012 - Accommodation\Travel

Forum message from Sub Divo:

Hello Everyone!

A friend and I are looking at booking a (nice) apartment in Doussard for the first week of the Annecy trip, the 31st March - 7th April.

The apartment has three bedrooms, so we currently have a room spare which has a bunk bed. If anyone is interested it will work out at £125 for the week. This includes accommodation for seven nights, linen, cleaning, utilities and breakfast cereals etc.

Given that we've currently made no travel plans, we're particularly interested in hearing from anyone who would be willing to provide transport to/from Annecy (for two) in exchange for free accommodation.

The date out may be flexible (going on the 30th) but the return date is fixed unfortunately.

Best wishes, David

Forum message from Dan Balla:

It wasn't my purpose for the day, but as I was setting up my approach I thought I was the last pilot in the air. However, you can see Luke on video launching just as I was coming in. However his little victory was short lived as Ozzie had the final flight afterall :)

PS. Sorry about the rough video, I need to get my hands on some decent video editing software. Any recommendations? (Win7 OS).

Flight Diary from ScottD:

Date of Flight: Sat, 28 Jan 2012
Site: Firle
Wing: Flex HG

A tempting northerly forecast came along at the same time my leg was finally feeling strong enough to launch with... so it was off to Firle and a rather nervous return to the air after my accident last June...

It was a distinct pleasure to buy you all a beer in the pub afterwards - it felt so good to be in the air again...

Endless thanks to all those who have helped and encouraged me over these last months... in particular Ozzie...
Flight Diary from Dan Balla:

Date of Flight: Sat, 28 Jan 2012
Site: Firle
Wing: Flex HG

What an excellent turnout at Firle today!
We had lots of fun, and we enjoyed the whole ridge from Beddingham to Bo Peep, with lots of thermals to play around.
Great to see so many pilots, and especially to see Scott back in the air.
Come on spring!
Flight Diary from Mark_t:

Date of Flight: Sat, 28 Jan 2012
Site: Firle
Wing: Paraglider

10am-11.30am was pleasant for PG flying at Firle - sunny, small thermals, whole north ridge flyable, and good airmanship, so not crowded. The wind then got up a little and we left it to the HGs

uneventful flight, no Sunset, but very interesting discoveries!

Flight Diary from Thomas:

Date of Flight: Fri, 27 Jan 2012
Site: Mount Caburn
Wing: Paraglider

Just wanted to have a little late afternoon flight, I love flying while the sun is setting! Unfortunately a weather front was approaching when I passed Lewis (at 4 pm) and that was the "beautiful" sunset. Coming from Lewis I had seen a Glider in the air on Caburn, which looked promising. Wind was still fine on the bottom of the hill and I made my way up, finding medium wind and a not too fast approaching front. When I reached the top I found Laura and Ashley from Australia just packing up their wings, really praising the smooth flying conditions here. Starting to chat to them I found out that they are touring the south east on a Tandem bike (!) with trailer (!), with full camping gear (!) and 2 paragliders on board (!). They were just about to pitch up tent nearby for the night, hoping for tomorrows weather to be flyable! Coming from hot Australia they did not seem to mind the English winter temperatures at all, absolutely amazing!!! They intend to be around as long as it is flyable, you might meet them on the hill this weekend!

I had 20 uneventful minutes of ridge soaring and then decided to land because of the front and rain coming closer.

Stolen Kit

Forum message from davem:

Judy Leden sent a message using the contact form at
http://www.shgc.org.uk/contact.

I wonder if you and your club members could keep your eyes open for our
Woody Valley Bix harness & a green Ozone Element paraglider which were
stolen from us at the end of May last year,?

This brand new harness which we had just bought for tandem flying in our
school, had a brand new Apco @@@Bi@@@ reserve in it.

The Ozone Element was one of our school wings and was almost new.

The harness is unique in this country @@" we are the sole importer for
Wills Wing and it is the only one in the UK (tho there will be another in
the Sussex area shortly). It is grey on the back, the rest is black.
Distinguishing features: the seat plate is REALLY wide
It has @@@BIX@@@ written on the side.

The Ozone Element that was stolen is - SIZE Medium- COLOUR stripes from
front: dark green, white, light green; SERIAL NO K25A-001

Very few pilots fly the Element as their first glider @@" once finished in
the school, they usually buy a higher performance glider.
These items have undoubtedly been moved on by the thieves. I found one of
the other paragliders they stole on Ebay - the thieves are prolific
burglars operating in the Wigan area.
We were not insured for these losses and have not been able to replace this
kit.

If anyone sees these items being flown, please could they let me know.

Many thanks
Flight Diary from Andrew Craig:

Date of Flight: Mon, 23 Jan 2012
Site: Devils Dyke
Wing: Paraglider

It was flyable, though not very pleasant, early on. I managed to get my feet into my new pod a bit more easily -- I even did it with big boots on. Tim King showed that it was much liftier further out from the ridge, but then it got too windy for most PGs, while the hanglies came out to play. After several cups of tea, it came on again, then got too strong for all but Dave Massie. A few drops of rain after 1530 sent me home, despit the easing wind. In my rear view mirror I saw four PGs up, but as I hit the A23 I drove through a heavy shower -- I hope no one got their wing wet.

Later, (13:30 ish?) when the wind had turned a little more SSW me, Sebastian and [EDIT] Gandhi (not Ghandi, spelling mistake) did the cliff run from Beachy Head past Belle Tout and Birling Gap, along the Seven Sisters to the Cuckmere Valley and back. Nice thermals off the sea. A nice start to 2012 as I hadn't flown for 3 months. Flight took around 35 minutes or so.

UK_ALL_2

is now has (i think) most/all UK free flying sites

and thanks to this brilliant little tool (see kink below) has correct altitudes

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert?convert_format=gpx&form=elevation&profile_y_min=0.000001&form:add_elevation=auto
nb that link will add AMSL altitudes to pretty much ANY GPS file format, inc Google earth, which by default clamps waypoints to the ground.
Here's the details of the SeeYou file format

Reply to Flight Diary 1st flight using my Android phone HTC wildfire S running XCSoar software. from Miles:

http://download.naviter.com/docs/cup_format.pdf

its pretty simple really

I've been using Excel to collate sites but XL & saving as comma delimited, but bloody Excel 2003 ALWAYS reverts to TAB delimited rather than COMMA delimited format, which is a nusance, if like me you tend to hit save randomly (you have to do a file save as each flippin time)

Would REALLY appreciate it if you can create a whole of UK sites file with correct Altitudes.

even better if your also willing to create regional versions eg South UK, Mid Wales, etc (well the weather does look crap for a few days), thouugh if you add the Club in field 11 I could split it up myself

incidentally I'm still trying to understand the intricacies of the Waypoint Style, wrt to how XCSoar uses / priorities them for things like Alternates (landing options) but "1" seems to be OK, I do have a good file of glider sites/airfields, should you need to be cheeky & outland (assume its of more use to us Hangies, than PGers, given you can always carry your wing home on the bus)
Look forward to your effort Dave

Cheers Miles

Radio connectors help

Forum message from MarkR:

Hi

Does anyone know where I can get an adaptor that would allow a headset with a two-pin connector made for a pmr radio fit my Yaesu vx110 radio which takes a single pin with 4-poles.

I tried Maplins but they didn't seem to have anything that would do the job. Can anyone suggest an alternative supplier? Or how difficult would it be to make one?

Thank you.
CAA approves transition altitude change for south east England

Forum message from Steve Purdie:

CAA approves transition altitude change for south east England
06/01/2012 10:00:31
Following a request from air traffic service provider NATS, the CAA has approved changes to the Transition Altitude* beneath the Worthing and Clacton Control Areas (CTAs) to the east and south of London. The approved change will harmonise the Transition Altitude level at 6,000ft for both Worthing and Clacton CTAs and align these areas with adjacent controlled airspace. The change does not include the creation of any new controlled airspace or changes to airspace classification. It will mainly affect airspace over the English Channel.

The CAA said its decision would enhance safety in the area by simplifying airspace structures and boundaries, and ensuring that all aircraft use the same Transition Altitude, removing possible operational confusion. The change is also in line with the CAA's commitment to harmonise Transition Altitudes inside and outside UK Controlled Airspace. It will also simplify operations below Controlled Airspace in the South East of England ahead of the London 2012 Olympics.

The CAA also pointed out that a major new initiative to raise the Transition Altitude nationally to a much higher level will soon begin its consultation phase. This initiative will enable subsequent redesign of Standard Instrument Departures allowing aircraft improved departure and arrival trajectories. These will have significant environmental benefits due to lower CO2 emissions from reduced fuel burn. It may also increase the airspace available to general aviation.

The CAA's approval follows a three-month consultation carried out by NATS earlier this year. The changes will take effect from 8 March 2012.

*A Transition Altitude is the level at which an aircraft's height changes from being measured in feet-above-sea level to a @Flight Level'.
UK flying sites waypoint file for XCSoar

Reply to Flight Diary 1st flight using my Android phone HTC wildfire S running XCSoar software. from Miles:

I bumped into you last Friday on BoPeep, & asking if you had a good XCSoar waypoint file set for UK ..... you said were using a Sailplane turnpoint file off the XCSOar website.

Thus it seems the one I've been busy compiling, may be of use to you

Note:

- UK_all.cup MAY be too big your your Andriod to handle, slow screen response, as its got pretty much ALL GB/Wales/Scot/OIW sites in there, suggest you try the other one 1st

- in either file ALL SHGC sites are complete

- However both files have a number of non SHGC sites where I do not know the height, where this is the case I've entered -99999999.0m (thus any XCSoar calc's, like required Glide, Arrival height above waypoint etc should be obviously wrong for these)

-Due to SHGC website rules, I've had to attached them as ".txt", so you will need to change the file extension from ".txt" to ".cup" to let XCSoar use it

eg UK-HG_Sites_incomplete.txt to UK-HG_Sites_incomplete.cup

Of course if you come across a better more complete data set pls return the favour

Re pods: being a newbie pod pilot I have fixed a strap from inside the bottom of the pod which I attach to my left boot and can then lift the pod and get my right boot in. Berey told me the name for such a strap but it sounded rude. I hope I never have to get out of my harness in a hurry.
Boating with the SkySurfers

Flight Diary from Neil Banks:

Date of Flight: Mon, 16 Jan 2012
Site: Other
Wing: Paraglider

After a quiet night at work I arrived home just after 7am. Sleep or fly? A quick look at Wendy and I grabbed my kit.
Due to work, social commitments and ropey weather I hadn't flown since October last year in France.
Thought about heading to Bo Peep but why sit in the car for an hour and 15mins when Mercury is only 45mins away. The soarable ridge at Mercury is a lot shorter than Bo Peep, especially when the areomodellers pitch up, but it's usually a lot less crowded. And so it proved today.
After a quick coffee stop I arrived at 8.30am. As the 1st on site I checked with the farmer that it was OK to fly, then had the whole place to myself for at least an hour apart from 1 areomodeller.
No great height gains, 100ft max at most, but I brushed off the rust and had some relaxed flying with only 3 on the ridge including myself when it got really busy!
In need of a snooze I finally packed up and left at 2.30pm. Still 1 in the air as I drove off and 2 above the ridge at Whitewool. Well worth a bit of sleep deprivation and the £1 daily site fee.
Thanks for the tip. Looking at the pics, it seemed that the pod was not hanging down very far, so I'll try Dave's tip about tightening the leg straps. I should also watch the Advance video about setting up the harness, and experiment while dangling somewhere other than in the air. And I may need some footwear other than big clumpy boots. It's lucky that on Friday it was always easy to get in for a top landing quickly... and that I have no plans to have children.
