Where do you get the information '...otherwise the UK may well decide to go the same way as Switzerland (and other countries) and simply ban it completely...' Have you got the ear of the law makers? Or is this just speculation?

If you have contacts, then report these buggers and get them banned, no point in coming on here complaining, the offenders are not SHGC members and don't read this forum.

In actuality, the authorities are not interested in the slightest, last year, a paramotorist flew right past the Brighton Center inside a NOTAM'd air exclusion zone. The result? An escort out of the area and a 'nice matey matey tour of the police helicopter' once on the ground. The fact is this; the authorities don't give a toss.
Reply to Forum message An increasing number of complaints about paramotoring activities from David Webb:

In my businesses, I deal with many residents in Telscombe Cliffs and East Saltdean and if ever I mention paragliding (ie soaring the cliffs) the immediate response invariably becomes a moan about the incessant noise nuisance caused by paragliders ! in this area. I also receive complaints about very low flying by paramotors over houses and gardens next to Telscombe Tye.
If paramotor pilots don't want paramotoring to be banned...

Reply to Forum message An increasing number of complaints about paramotoring activities from Flybubble:

The point is, if paramotor pilots don't want paramotoring to be banned then there had better be a serious change in the way that paramotor pilots are behaving generally otherwise the UK may well decide to go the same way as Switzerland (and other countries) and simply ban it completely. I would guess that once it has been banned it will be extremely difficult to have the ban removed again.

It seems unlikely that an increase in the amount of paramotor activity will reduce the number of complaints.

The more paramotors you have flying at one time, the greater the noise level.

It seems to me that, for whatever reason, a high proportion of people who fly paramotors don't seem to realise that they are causing a nuisance to others - sometimes even when it is very obvious to almost everyone else. Just because you don't think you are causing a nuisance doesn't mean nobody else does!

Paramotors make a lot of noise and move very slowly through the sky - i.e. the noise lingers for a long time. The fact that people tend to fly paramotors are relatively low altitudes makes the noise level (i.e. the nuisance factor) worse.

If you are a paramotor pilot, consider this every time you fly: When you are flying a paramotor by far the greater proportion of people who see and hear you don't think that paramotors are "a great and wonderful thing"; most people find them extremely irritating and a considerable nuisance - especially if any activities are anywhere near where they live or if they are trying to have a nice peaceful time (out walking, on holiday, riding their horse etc). Always make every effort to keep as far away from people (and buildings, livestock etc) as possible, and minimise the amount of nuisance you are likely to cause. If it seems unavoidable that you will cause a nuisance then, don't fly.
An increasing number of complaints about paramotoring activities

Forum message from Flybubble:

We've been receiving an increasing number of complaints about paramotoring activities in the southeast of England, especially over the past year.

For example, yesterday we received a phone call from the police investigating "numerous complaints" about paramotoring activities in and around our area. It sounded like the police were looking for someone to arrest for causing a nuisance, as well as for airspace infringements.

I guess the police will also be reporting these complaints and their findings to the CAA, which could very easily have an negative effect of the freedoms currently enjoyed by paramotor pilots (as well as other aviation activities, such as paragliding and hang gliding).

To illustrate the point, I know that after a number of similar complaints and incidents in Switzerland, paramotoring is now completely banned there. It is now totally illegal to paramotor anywhere in Switzerland, and the police will arrest anyone doing it. I have heard of instances where people have tried to paramotor illegally in Switzerland since the ban on paramotoring was imposed only to be arrested, fined heavily and have all of their equipment permanently confiscated from them. There is even a risk of a prison sentence if the offence is deemed serious enough, or in the case of repeat offences.

It is clear that these complaints about paramotoring activities also reflect badly on paragliding, as the two activities look very similar from a distance (even if they don't sound the same). It also doesn't take much investigating to work out that you can turn a paraglider into a paramotor by strapping a paramotor engine on your back (in theory at least).

Although I am one of the few BHPA licensed paramotor instructors, for various reasons we don't currently offer paramotoring courses. One of the main reasons for this is that I am extremely concerned that if there is an increase in the number of people engaging in paramotoring activities in our area (with all the associated noise pollution, general nuisance and seemingly inevitable airspace infringements) then this is likely to have a negative effect on the freedoms we currently enjoy as foot-launched 'freeflight' pilots.

If you take part in paramotoring activities, sell paramotoring equipment or offer paramotoring training then please do so in a (more!) responsible and considerate manner. Always think about the long term good of all of our aviation activities, not just your short-term enjoyment (or profits) and always carefully consider the possible consequences of your actions (short, medium and long term).

Best wishes
Devil's Dyke to Lewes

Reply to Flight Diary from Neville Styke:

"Got back to almost 2500ft where I think I stumbled into the SBF (do they happen on Blue days?)"

Yes, they do, but it's much harder to follow as it's not visible without convergence cloud. I do it by imagining where the cold sea air is flooding inland over the low lying areas and then I fly following a course above the contours of the junction between higher ground and the imagined cold layer.
Dyke delivers...

Flight Diary from Mark_t:

Flying all day at the Dyke (about 10.30am - sunset), with bouyant air out frount, aided by a few bonfires around Fulking, so could easily fly 1km straight out from the hill and back - and several managed what looked to be quite significant out and returns in the direction of Henfield. In the end, at 3pm I decided to go for a downwind adventure to get started on my xcs for the season, and managed to get to ASDA. Not epic, but not bad for mid afternoon at this time of year - I did not go earlier as it took quite a while for the inversion to lift. In the end decided to go for it in a half decent thermal at about 1,500'. I found a couple more weak thermals over the back, making 2,000 ASL at most, and but was just a little too low by the time I reached Brighton to risk looking for thermals over the town, and instead flew along the A27 but found no other lift.

Paramotor noise

Reply to Forum message An increasing number of complaints about paramotoring activities from Franko:

Carlo, It wasn't me making a noise yesterday. I have been too busy working to go flying, dammit!

I have been weightshift microlight pilot and, more lately, a paramotor jockey in the this part of the world for the last 25 years. It is possible to power-fly without drawing adverse attention but it does require thought and restraint (and at least a nod towards adherence of the 500ft rule) on the part of the pilot... Never repeating the same track on the same day, avoiding overflight of villages and large, isolated houses (the originators of most complaints! Bring on the revolution...). But those who power-fly should know this as I am sure you do.

Personally I would like to see many more paramotor pilots in the air, but only those who act responsibly. I say this because it can get quite miserable flying on your own all the time @ and doing powered XC in the company of other is fun and largely deals with the problems of noise pollution.

Education is the answer, not prohibition! I really don't think that the Swiss provide a good example of anything other than national smugness, hypocrisy and anal retention!!! But I digress.

Having said all this, I now consider free-flying to be the highest and most enjoyable aerial art-form, being far more (or at least differently) demanding and altogether a more cerebral experience.
Flight Diary from Chris Jones:

Busy on the hill but got a good climb with Dave Massie at 12.30 and decided to go with it and see what happened. Got 2.5ms on the averager low down but it became much weaker. eventually got to 3k over the north of Brighton where there was a sea breeze deffinately comming in so headed NE before finding another climb over the Uni. Got back to almost 2500ft where I think I stumbled into the SBF (do they happen on Blue days?). Ran eastwards getting a sound thrashing and slowly loosing height but didn't get a good climb and landed by the A27 at Lewes where smoke was still drifing Southwards. Easy retrieve right back to the Devils Dyke pub.
