Chest strap not clipped in properly

Whilst getting ready to launch my chest strap clip popped open. I had obviously not pushed it closed properly. Note to self: yank on straps after clipping in.

clunk click pull & wiggle

Hi Karim
Thank goodness you notced it in time. I saw a guy take off with one of those harnesses that has the 2 leg straps that buckle up to make the chest strap too. One came un clipped at take off and because of the design of this configuration, he was left dangling very low to one side. He did manage to get down on the take off slope but span due to the height of one of his risers and him pulling that brake.

I often fly on sand dunes and it is a real hazard there because the sand is forever getting in the buckles. A definate clunk click and a pull should always be done as a pre flight check. Keep your buckles clean and check them - they are a cruicial part of the aircraft.

Sandy bits

Tim et al

Has anyone else had problems with their Skyline harness buckles jamming when sand/grit is around? I keep my Skyline Core clean as poss - and it works beautifully when so
- but is a *bugger* when sandy.

Or is this the case for all makes?

Cheers

dirty buckles

This is the main drawback of QR buckles. They will all fail if full of dirt, or they will wear out fast.

If you suspect dirty buckles, blow out with an airline or wash with alcohol. DO NOT OIL THEM!

If you are planning to go Dune flying then try to beg, borrow or steal a harness with pass-through buckles as they don't suffer so badly from sand damage.
